Paper on Morrison Street

The artist Jodie Cavalier invited me to contribute work to a gallery show about “paper.” I had no real drawing or paper-based practice at that time, so instead I contributed this handmade 16mm film that uses paper fibers as the primary material. For many years I had a spacious studio in a big brick building on Portland’s Southeast Morrison Street between SE 2nd Avenue and SE 3rd Avenue. A lot of trash collected in this covered area under the Morrison Bridge overpass. I collected some and brought it inside to my studio and created this “paper transfer” film, made by soaking bits of the paper trash in water, lifting some fibers with scotch tape, and transferring this material to clear film leader.
