When curator Simeen Anjum invited me to contribute work to a group exhibition about “time and slow looking,” I was ecstatic. I knew that I wanted to expand my 1000 Waters video series into an installation. An initial site visit to the Littman Gallery in Portland, Oregon, inspired me to wrap one large moveable gallery wall entirely in video frames and to create a “river of time” out of video frames for the gallery walls.  I spent many hours watching videos in my collection of 1000 shots of water and decided on two sets of frames. The 1000 Waters Monument... uses a selection of shot of hot springs, pools, and other bodies of water and the other, 1000 Water Wall of Joy...uses just a few seconds of a Minute Movie from 2012, a beautiful video of my friends splashing in the Pacific Ocean. I created long titles for each work to communicate more of the process behind the work, a technique that recalls the titles of my graduate school thesis videos, the Experiments in Immediacy series. I think of these two-dimensional photographic works as a kind of extreme slow motion, so slow in fact, that the motion has stopped. Viewers can slowly take in every tiny change in the frames over time: every water droplet as it careens through air to the beach, every light beam as it moves over a hand submerged in a hot spring pool. I also included all 1000 Waters videos looping on two monitors.
